While this is very style specific, I see footwork as a combination/blend between your kung fu and animal movements. Our hung gar lion dance heavily uses a lot of footwork from our sets. The way we move and the sequences. On top of that, there is animation which my sifu and sisook told me to watch a cat. Surprisingly, (or not), catís movement do mimic what we do.

I noticed that a preying mantis school had more bouncy footwork. I attributed it to their kung fu.

I would skip the kung fu stance work completely since that tends to make the movement less realistic. I'd focus purely on aesthetics since that is what looks good. Imitating animals is a start since they naturally have four feet.
