Hope year of the Ox is a good one for you!

Last night I made a mad dash to cook tonight's dinner, put away the knives, take out the trash, shower & shave before midnight.

Curious what traditions other people keep…

The one that I keep always is staying vegetarian on NY day. Usually I make jai (well I guess it's all jai if it's vegetarian, but you know). Usually I put out the oranges and lai si in each room, make gau, etc. I don't wash my hair on new years either.

We had a gig today and it was just crazy so all I ended up doing is avoiding meat. But I'll get the rest done by lantern festival anyway.

LOL--I just waited until after midnight to take a shower last night!

My mom always cooked jai, but I only like certain ingredients so I don't make it.

If you take the gau and pan fry it until the outside is crispy and the inside is gooey it's the best!

Are there other types of Gau aside from Neen Gau and Lo Bat (Daikon) Gau?

Aside from wearing red and making Neen Gau and Lo bat gau, my family has never adhered to other common CNY customs. What others are there?

Wu Tau (taro) Gau, Bok Tang (white sugar) Gau…

Is the LoBat Gau the same as you get at dimsum places? Love that stuff when it's fried nice and crispy!

Ah... I have yet to try taro and sugar.

Yep. Lo Bat Gau is the same stuff you get off the cart. Except my mother usually makes it vegetarian without any lap cheung. I have no idea what goes into the neen gau.

Mostly brown sugar and flour if I remember right, but my parents haven't made it since I was a kid and I didn't pay much attention back then. Maybe I'll google it and have my kids make a batch or two.
