Virgina Tech.

I'm sure by now everyone has heard about the tragedy that happened Monday, April 16, 2007 at Virgina Tech University. If you haven't please visit

http://abcnews.go.com/US/VATech/

for more information.

Do you think HATE CRIMES against Koreans or Asians will increase, just like it did for Middle Easterners after September 11th?

I mean, even though the killer was Korean, many people are ignorant to the different Asian ethnicities. I am Chinese American, and I am a bit worried that racial comments might be mis-directed towards me because I might look like a "Korean" person.

Thoughts?

This was a terrible thing and while driving to work on Wednesday my radio station of choice reported the shooter was a "Chinese National." My first reaction was, "oh crap, another mark against Chinese in the public eye."

Then when I actually got to work and read some real news sites and found out he was a legal immigrant from South Korea it just pissed me off that news stations can't even tell the difference.

I hope people are smart enough to know that one person acting alone does not represent all Koreans, much less all Asians, but the world is so full of idiots it's hard to not feel apprehension that it will cause more anti-Asian acts.

I can't imagine the negative effects this will have on immigration reform (already a hot topic in Congress) and gun control legislation.

I work at a University and I was talking to a Korean American professor about it and she had already heard comments from her students along the lines of, "he looks/acts just like my roommate."

We also noted the reaction of South Korea who issued an apology. We wondered if a non-Asian country would have reacted the same way if it were one of their citizens who committed such a crime.

Any way you look at it this will affect the way people see Asians in the US.

When someting bad happen people will tend to find the easiest target to pinned the blame on...ie. 'he is not like us'. I do not think it will change things concerning race relation because it will only give ammunition to people who were already bigots. It would be interesting to note that the shooter as spend his formative years(8-23) in the US & he has more in common with the average American than Korean.

Very sad. Unfortunately it is as george says. However, in LA where chris lives, african americans and korean americans are already at tensions.

I am curious as to why he did it, some of his writings for school plays/scripts (?) shows that mybe he was abused as a child? Maybe I'm reading to much into it? Becaused in it he had a character wanting to kill a priest for abuse , and they mentioned how he railed against christianity in his video.

It would be funny if there are those would make such remarks don't also realize that most mass murderers in the US are white.
